A Fixie Bike also sometimes called Fixed-Gear Bicycle is a type of Single Speed Bike. That means a Fixie Bike has only one single gear on its drivetrain and is also stripped down to only its barest components. But unlike your Single Speed Bike, most Fixie Bikes do not have freewheel mechanism and are sometimes even brakeless. In order to stop, a biker has to use his legs to put it into a skid and stop. The biker also cannot stop pedaling as Fixie Bikes do not have freewheel mechanism that enables coasting. Fixie Bikes use the Direct Drive motion that means pedaling forward will move the bicycle forward while pedaling backward will drive the bicycle backwards. Fixie Bikes are hard work and may be difficult for amateur bikers. And although Fixies only currently serve a niche market in Singapre, they are already able to create a subculture among the bikers.
Fixies are Great-Looking
If you’ve ever seen a really cool-looking bike in one of the streets in Singapore, most likely it was a Fixie Bike! The number one reason why these bikes are such a hit is because of their clean, minimalist, simplistic look. They can also look so classy and even hipster-like. There is tons of customization you can do on your Fixie Bike, too!
Fixies are Really Fast
If you want a bike that can go really fast but don’t really want to exert such hard work, then you have to look for a Fixie Bike! When you ride the Fixie, you can’t really stop pedaling so that means the bike is always accelerating which in turn means more speed. And even if you just try to bike slow, the bike itself is just going faster given its unchanging speed.
Fixies are Super Light
If you’re looking for a bike that you can easily bring with you anywhere you go and even bring upstairs to your apartment, then the Fixie Bike is best for you! These bikes are so light you can effortlessly carry them with just one hand. The bikes are stripped of only the barest essentials so they’re saved from all those mechanical parts that weigh them down.
Fixies are Low Maintenance
If you don’t want to spend a lot of time going back and forth to your bike dealer or bicycle shop just for the regular maintenance and repair, then a Fixie Bike is your fix! Again, a Fixie is bared to its most essential parts – you just can’t stress this enough. That means there are lesser parts to worry about, maintain and repair. The bike is so simple that even amateur bikers can do the maintenance and repair by themselves.
Fixies are Dirt Cheap
If you want to get the best bike right now but don’t have the budget for it, get a Fixie Bike! Sure, there are also high-end pricey types of Fixie Bikes. But generally, these bikes are so affordable you can get a solid Fixie Bike without really making a dent on your budget. The bikes don’t come with as many parts as your regular bike so that alone makes them cheap. Plus, they’re super low maintenance and easy to repair that overall makes for the least money spent on a bike.
